Overnight stays in a motorhome in Barcelona: what the rules say

What you can and can’t do with your motorhome or campervan in Barcelona, and where to spend the night without any trouble.

Updated 22 October 2026

Parking, staying overnight and camping are not the same thing

A motorhome can stop and park like any other vehicle, following the same rules and the signs on each street. The DGT makes this point in its Instruction PROT 2026/04 on motorhomes, published in March 2026.

Camping is something else. Putting out the awning, tables, chairs or levelling blocks, taking up more space than the vehicle itself or emptying waste water usually counts as camping. The DGT also points out that town councils can limit parking time and ban camping outside authorised areas.

What Barcelona’s by-law says

Barcelona’s by-law on civic behaviour bans camping on streets and in public spaces, and expressly extends this to setting up camp in vehicles, motorhomes or caravans, except in authorised places. In practice, sleeping in your motorhome parked on the street puts you at risk of a fine.

So, to spend the night in Barcelona, the safe choice is a place that is set up for it: a car park that accepts motorhomes, a motorhome aire or a campsite.

Outside Barcelona: municipal aires and natural areas

Many towns in the surrounding area have motorhome aires with their own rules. For example, the one at Can Julià, in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, limits stays to 48 hours and does not allow you to put out an awning or canopy.

In protected natural areas, such as Collserola Park, you can’t camp outside authorised areas either.

The low emission zone

The Rondes de Barcelona LEZ operates all year, Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 20:00. Without a DGT environmental sticker you can’t drive in it during those hours. If your vehicle has foreign number plates, register it beforehand on the Barcelona Metropolitan Area’s LEZ website, even if it meets the requirements.

Where you can stay overnight

We’ve brought together on one page the car parks, aires and campsites around Barcelona where you can spend the night, with their prices, services and how to get to the centre from each one.

Tips for a trouble-free night

  • Check the entry hours before you set off: some places close at night and won’t let you in during the early hours.
  • In summer and when conferences are on, book ahead if the place allows it.
  • Fill up with water and empty your tanks at a proper service point, never in the street.
  • Save the address and phone number of your overnight stop on your mobile.
