Staying overnight in Barcelona: what the rules say

Barcelona’s by-law on civic behaviour bans camping on streets and in public spaces, and that includes setting up camp in vehicles, motorhomes or caravans outside authorised places. To spend the night without any trouble, the safe choice is a car park, aire or campsite that allows it.

The DGT points out that a motorhome can stop and park like any other vehicle, and that each town council can limit parking time and ban camping outside authorised areas (Instruction PROT 2026/04, March 2026).

Low emission zone: can you drive in with your motorhome?

The Rondes de Barcelona low emission zone (LEZ) operates all year, Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 20:00. During those hours, vehicles without a DGT environmental sticker cannot drive in it: for example, petrol vehicles that predate the Euro 3 standard and diesels that predate Euro 4.

With a 0, ECO, C or B sticker you can drive in without restrictions. If your vehicle has foreign number plates, you must register it on the LEZ website beforehand, even if it meets the requirements: otherwise the fine is €200 or more.

Where to fill up with water and empty your tanks in Barcelona

These places on the list have a waste disposal point, according to their websites:

Note: Wheels Rest has no waste disposal point.

Disposal points are marked with the DGT’s S-128 sign. Never empty your tanks in the street or down a drain: it pollutes and it is prohibited.

Things to do in Barcelona when you come by motorhome

Leave the motorhome and get around by metro. Here’s how to reach the sights from the two places within walking distance of the metro:

  • Passeig de Gràcia and Casa Batlló: Passeig de Gràcia
  • La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter: Liceu
  • Montjuïc: Paral·lel, then the funicular
  • Camp Nou: Palau Reial or Les Corts

Wheels Rest

From Fira metro (L9 Sud)

  • Airport, Terminals 1 and 2: direct
  • Camp Nou: get off at Collblanc
  • City centre and La Rambla: change to the L1 at Torrassa
  • Sagrada Família: change to the L5 at Collblanc

Safety: how not to get robbed in Barcelona

Barcelona is easy to visit, but there are thefts in the tourist areas. Four tips to avoid any nasty surprises.

Full safety guide
  1. Stay overnight on a fenced or monitored site. On the street your motorhome is more exposed, and camping on public streets is not allowed.
  2. Leave nothing on show. No bags, phones or documents on the dashboard.
  3. Watch out for pickpockets on the metro, on La Rambla and on the beaches.
  4. Keep 112 to hand and the phone number of the place where you’re staying.

Frequently asked questions about staying overnight in Barcelona

Can you stay overnight on the street in Barcelona?

Best not. Barcelona’s by-law on civic behaviour bans camping on public streets, and that includes setting up camp in vehicles, motorhomes or caravans outside authorised places. To spend the night, the safe choice is a car park, aire or campsite that allows it.

How much does it cost to stay overnight in a motorhome in Barcelona?

At the places on this page that publish a price, between €15 and €40 a night. At campsites you usually pay per person as well.

Where can you stay overnight near the centre of Barcelona?

The two places on the list inside the city are about 5.0 and 5.7 km from Plaça de Catalunya, both within walking distance of the metro: Camper Park Barcelona, next to Fira metro (L9 Sud), and Wheels Rest, next to Valldaura metro (L3).

Where can you empty grey and black water in Barcelona?

At the places on this page with a waste disposal point: Camper Park Barcelona, Willow Park, Àrea d'autocaravanes de Can Julià, Área Camperland Barcelona, Caravaning Park Vallès and Area Camper Barcelona Beach. Use the ‘Waste disposal’ filter to show them.

Is it safe to leave your motorhome in Barcelona?

The safest option is a fenced or monitored site. In the tourist areas there are thefts from vehicles parked on the street, so leave nothing on show.

Can I drive into the low emission zone in my motorhome?

It depends on your environmental sticker: with a 0, ECO, C or B sticker you can drive in without restrictions. The LEZ operates Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 20:00, and vehicles with foreign number plates must be registered beforehand.

Do I need to book?

It depends on the place: some take online bookings, others take bookings by phone or email, and some don’t take bookings and give out spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. We say which on each place’s page.
